Lydiate Learning Trust is seeking three new Members and two new Non-Executive Directors to join it’s board. Established in January 2015, Lydiate Learning Trust is a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT) with an ethos rooted in the belief that every child should be afforded the very best opportunities in life. Board meetings are held in the Maghull area of Merseyside.

About the Trust

The trust was borne from the vision of a group of Governors, the Head Teacher and Senior Leaders of Deyes High School – It currently has two secondary schools, a Studio school (for ages 14-19) and a large teacher training centre known as the AMP SCITT (Associated Merseyside Partnership, School Centred Initial Teacher Training).

There are currently two sponsored schools within the trust. As a sponsor, the trust plays a large role in helping to improve attainment by providing: support to leadership at all levels; quality first teaching of the highest standard based on co-operative learning techniques; individual support at all levels with clear progression routes and a range of extra-curricular opportunities that enhance the curriculum and broaden horizons whilst further enhancing skill development and leadership.

The AMP SCITT is underpinned by a shared passion and drive to train and develop outstanding and inspirational teachers who are highly employable, highly successful educational professionals and leaders of learning.  It is governed by the SCITT Executive Board which reports directly to the trust board.

The trust is also a strategic partner in the Holy Rosary Teaching School Alliance which spans both the Primary and Secondary sectors and includes 12 Primary Schools and three Secondary Schools.

Role Summary

Roles 1 to 2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.

Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

Person Specification

The trust seeks applicants with strategic leadership skills who are effective communicators and have experience of providing constructive challenge and critical insight. Experience of long-term planning is essential. The individual should have commercial acumen and business focus, honesty and integrity and genuine enthusiasm for improving education. It is important that any non-executive director has the ability to maintain confidentiality and to respect the opinion of others.

Time Commitment

4-6 hours per month (on average) - though the board meets bi-monthly.

 

Roles 3 to 5 – Member

A member is able to alter the trust’s Articles of Association and appoint (or remove) trustees/directors where necessary. They provide independent oversight to the work of the board of trustees in order to ensure suitable accountability for its decision making and strategy. At Lydiate Learning Trust the members are expected to be signatories for the academy trust and to add to the already broad skillset within the existing team of members.

Person Specification

This individual should be able to analyse effective leadership and governance systems; to review the effectiveness of an organisation in a strategic way; and to ensure that the vision of the trust is maintained by those who lead and work for the company.

Time Commitment

Approximately 6 hours per year. Members are currently expected to attend one meeting per year (though this may increase as the trust grows).

Background on Academy Trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You do not need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
