Are you looking to make a difference to the education sector by joining an academy trust board? Woodard Academies Trust serves very diverse communities extending from the North East to the South Coast and seeks two non-executives/directors, with either a commercial background or significant senior leadership experience within higher education to join its board. Board meetings are held in WC2N 6LE when safe to do so.
WAT was established in 2007 and is part of the Woodard Schools group, which was founded by Nathaniel Woodard in 1848 and now includes independent schools, affiliated state schools and academies, and sponsored academies. WAT educates 6,500 young people from ages three to eighteen, employs 850 members of staff and operates within a £36m budget. The Trust serves very diverse communities extending from the North East to the South coast. Across the schools, the proportion of children in receipt of free school meals ranges between 5-30%. Four of the schools were rated as Requires Improvement by Ofsted and two were rated as Good at their last inspection. The trust high ambitions for each school to be judged by Ofsted to be at least ‘Good’ at its next inspection.
The board seeks two business leaders with experience in
- CEO/Managing Director
- Corporate Governance or
- Growth/Change Management or
- Senior leadership in higher education
As a key member of the board you will support the trust in achieving the following over the next 12 – 24 months:
- Improve Pupil Outcomes – To improve pupil outcomes by implementing the Trust’s strategy of driving school improvement with its focus on working collaboratively to improve leadership and the quality of teaching and learning.
- Improve Efficiency - To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Trust’s shared services e.g., finance, procurement, integrating systems to maximise use of its resources for teaching and learning.
- Recruitment and Retention- To develop a People Strategy so that the trust attracts, recruits, develops and retains the best employees, and a marketing strategy to attract and retain pupils in schools operating below capacity.
Board governance in education is a strategic, ‘eyes on, hands off’ commitment which typically involves attending c. six board meetings per year/6-8 hours’ time per month.
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
- Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent
As an Academy Ambassador, you will join our ambassador network which provides resources, guidance, networking events and webinars to support you in your role.
