Steel City Schools Partnership (SCSP) is seeking a new non-executive director to join its board. The trust is located in north Sheffield and serves approximately 1,350 primary age pupils, in communities which suffer from high levels of challenge and deprivation. Over 17 languages are spoken across its rich and diverse community. Board meetings are held in the north Sheffield area.
About the Trust
SCSP is a Multi-Academy Trust currently serving five primary schools, three of which have nursery provision. Monteney Primary School converted as an academy in 2013 and became a sponsor for both Fox Hill and Mansel primaries. These schools serve north Sheffield, working closely with the immediate primary family of schools and within the locality. The area is known to have high levels of deprivation, with rate of eligibility for Free School Meals at 63% in of the schools. Greenhill and Windmill Hill Primaries joined the trust on 1st February 2018. Pupils from academies within this trust typically feed into Chaucer, Ecclesfield or Yewlands and Meadowhead Secondary (Greenhill).
Steel City Schools Partnership is proud to be founded on the principles of primary education. The trust is centered upon positive relationships, and understanding, adapting and responding to the diverse needs of individuals. Another academy has passed a resolution to join the trust and a further four primary schools are in detailed discussions with the trust about joining.
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- Growth of the trust to approximately 10 - 12 schools.
- Ensuring continued school and trust improvements in a tighter financial landscape.
The trust plans to grow to 10-12 schools, all primary, within 12-24 months - this includes partnerships with other local MAT's and SAT's. Following a Governance restructure, new members and trustees have joined the trust board and the trust seeks to further develop the skills and expertise at all levels of governance.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.

The trust seeks an individual with experience of asset management, within a property portfolio or estate/facilities role. Knowledge of up to date health and safety legislation, ideally with NEBOSH certification, would be a distinct advantage.

Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
