NMAT is seeking two new non-executive directors and a new member to join its board. The trust has evolved from Nunthorpe Standalone Academy in 2016. It is committed to working with like-minded colleagues who strive to deliver a high quality broad and balanced education to the young people of the North East of England. With the help of skilled board members, NMAT aims to improve results at both of its academies, and provide support raise the aspirations of young people in the community. Board meetings are held at Nunthorpe Academy, Guisborough Road, Nunthorpe, TS7 0LA.

About the trust

Whilst recognising the importance of English, Maths and Science NMAT is proud to promote participation and achievement in sports and the Arts. NMAT is currently made up of one Secondary Academy for 11 to 19 year olds and one Secondary Academy for 11-16 year olds.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. Raising aspirations of young people and their parents so that all aspire to reach their potential. Ensuring that all young people are able to make informed decisions about their post-16 opportunities.
  2. Ensure that all academies in the MAT achieve above national averages in terms of the key performance measures.
  3. Respond proactively to the financial pressures that academies are exposed to.
  4. Ensure that students of all abilities are supported and challenged across a breadth of subjects, helping them to become positive and valued citizens in their community.

NMAT recognises that it needs to have a year of consolidation ensuring that results at both academies improve so that the trust can demonstrate the capacity to support like-minded schools in the area.

Role Summary

Roles 1&2 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director

A trustee is required to make a contribution to the strategic growth of the MAT, to ensure financial and managerial propriety whilst staying 'true' to the MAT overarching vision. The Trustee Board is made up of a mixture of independent and educational experts. Training will be provided.

Person specification

The successful applicant must be a reliable, honest and trustworthy team player who is willing to hold leaders to account. They should be able to offer balanced and evidence based questions/judgments to help move the MAT in the right direction linked to its ethos and growth strategy.

Time commitment

3 hours attendance per meeting plus reading and preparation time; 6 meetings per year. The meetings are held on Wednesdays, and have a 5pm start.


Role 3 – Member

A member is able to alter the trust’s Articles of Association and appoint (or remove) trustees/directors where necessary. They provide independent oversight to the work of the main trust board in order to ensure suitable accountability for its decision making and strategy. At NMAT the members are expected to be signatories for the academy trust, to attend three meetings per year, and to add to the already broad skillset within the existing team of members.

Members meet for 2 hours per meeting; 3 meetings per year.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 980 multi academy trusts of 2+ schools.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You do not need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
