Ignis Academy Trust (IAT), seeks a non-executive director with experience of change and growth management to join its board. Board meetings are held at The Bedonwell Centre, Bedonwell Road, Belvedere, Bexley DA17 5PF. 

About the trust

IAT currently comprises three schools, all within the London borough of Bexley and within the same local community. Conversion to Academy status took place on 1st January 2017. With its academy status still in its infancy, the trust has an exciting development phase ahead of it.

The schools serve a diverse community with approximately 40% ethnic minority pupils and 12% disadvantaged pupils. Historically, Bexley has had a relatively low number of school leavers going on to higher education and the trust endeavours to increase the number of aspirant pupils towards this end through its innovative approach to the curriculum and teaching styles.

The trust is proud of the accomplishment of the lead school for the trust, Bedonwell Infant and Nursery School, which has two consecutive ‘outstanding’ Ofsted judgements, Teaching School Status, and leads the Bexley Teaching School Alliance (BTSA). The BTSA is the only teaching school in Bexley, and it works in partnership with other teaching schools through the Bromley and Bexley Collaborative of Teaching Schools.

Barrington Primary School has a specialist provision which currently caters for 10 pupils with speech and language difficulties. Bedonwell Junior School and Barrington Primary School both have ‘good’ Ofsted judgments and are supported by Bedonwell Infant and Nursery School as a National Support School.

Trust ethos & Values

IAT is passionate about ensuring all children experience the best foundation to their education in order to develop a lifelong enthusiasm for and love of high calibre trust leaders work together with the aim of improving and enhancing the performance of each school in order to achieve consistently high standards across the MAT. 

The trust aims to:

  • Provide high quality, exciting education for all children, both within and wider than the academy.
  • Address educational underperformance.
  • Maximise progress, attainment and aspirations.
  • Achieve top quartile performance.
  • Become the academies of first choice amongst parents.
  • Recruit and retain high-quality staff.
  • Enable a significant degree of individual academy autonomy, but with support and challenge towards the achievement of targets.

Plans for the Future

The trust aims to support all its schools to become good, and ultimately outstanding. Key challenges for the trust over the next 12 months are also to effect rapid improvement in order to ensure the standards in all trust schools meet and exceed national expectations. The trust is currently looking for good and better schools to support it in helping other schools to improve.  

During the next 3 years, IAT intends to:

  • Consolidate systems and economic sustainability for growth
  • Grow the MAT numbers to between 4-8 schools
  • Ensure all schools within the MAT are rated good and outstanding
  • Develop the facilities and environment of all MAT schools in order to facilitate and deliver excellence
  • Ensure financial stability by maximising efficiency, reducing costs and planning effectively for business growth

Person Specification

Non-executive directors need to have excellent interpersonal skills and be proactive. Some understanding or background reading on multi-academy trusts and their basic requirements will be helpful.

Time Commitment

4-6 hours per month minimum, including reading time

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 71% of secondary schools and 26% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.

Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools.  You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
