Grenestede Multi-Academy Trust based in East Grinstead seeks two Members and one non-executive director for its trust board. Board meetings are held at Halsford Park Primary School, Manor Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1LR.
About the trust
Grenestede Multi-Academy Trust comprises two primary schools, Halsford Park School and Baldwins Hill, with a combined total of 620 pupils on roll. Both schools serve diverse communities, with a mix of social backgrounds and approximately 25% of pupils are in receipt of Free School Meals. This generates approximately £100,000 of funding for Pupil Premium to close the attainment and progress gap of this group nationally.
The board is responsible for the overall strategy of the trust and its constituent schools. Since the trust’s formation in 2014, it has consistently raised the levels of achievement of its pupils and developed the leadership and teaching capabilities of its staff. Grenestede Multi-Academy Trust has achieved this by focusing on collaboration, the sharing of resources and development opportunities through the mobility of staff. Both schools within the trust maintain a strong working partnership with the parents and carers of its pupils in order both to create a culture of improvement and also to allow the trust to adapt to the needs of its pupils and local community.

Plans for the Future
There is a real opportunity for new trustees to make a contribution to the key challenges for the trust board over the next 12-24 months. We see these as:
- To maintain a strong financial position. Increasing costs and reduced central funding will impact upon the operations and future strategy of the trust. It is, therefore, imperative that the trust has strong financial expertise and leadership on its trust board. This leadership will help to steer the trust through a possible period of economic uncertainty.
- To ensure successful expansion of the trust. The trust aims to build a trust board structure that is able to oversee and develop a growing organisation. The trust plans to grow by two schools within the next 12 months, and by a further two to four schools within the next few years. The trust has plans to work with the Regional Schools Commissioner’s Office to become a sponsor for other local schools, which may generate additional growth within the trust.
- To strengthen local governing bodies. The outcome of its pupils is a priority for the trust. To ensure enhanced pupil outcomes, the trust plans to establish empowered local governing bodies in each school to assume increased responsibility for finance, premises management and the curriculum.
Number of Positions Advertised:
Role 1 & 2 – Member
Members are akin to the shareholders of a company. They have ultimate control over the trust, with the ability to appoint trustees and the right to amend the trust’s articles of association. Members meet bi-annually in the course of normal operations but may be called on more frequently.

Candidates should have an ability to develop an objective view of the trust’s financial and corporate health and form a strategy to support the long-term vision of the trust.
1 hour per month (minimum).
Role 3– Non-Executive Director
Trustees are akin to directors of a company. Trustees create the vision for the trust and provide the leadership to achieve it. The competencies required for this role include:

Grenestede Multi-Academy Trust seeks a non-executive director from a legal, compliance, strategic or change management background who has the ability to provide direction and oversight of the trust’s relationships with multiple agencies. Desirable experience would be large board support preferably in organisations that have complex, multi-team relationships. This non-executive director position requires experience of strategic leadership at a senior management level. All candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to provide robust challenge, advice and commercial acumen.
4 hours per month (minimum).

Background on academy trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 68% of secondary schools and 22% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
Trusteeship is a voluntary, unpaid role for people who have the energy and skills to make a real contribution to shaping the future of our schools. You don’t need to have any specialist knowledge of education.
