Ethos Multi Academy Trust (MAT) specialises in assessing, supporting and meeting the needs of children with wide ranging social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties; these young people sometimes find it difficult to work in ordinary mainstream schools. The trust seeks a non-executive director, with skills in real estate/property, to join its board. Board meetings are held at academy sites across Kirklees.
About the Trust
Ethos Multi Academy Trust was officially launched in September with three existing Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) all based within Kirklees. The three units have a strong and longstanding track record of providing high-quality support to children and schools across both primary and secondary sectors.
Within the trust, support is personalised to the individual need of the child and can take many forms, ranging from in-school training - focused on building the capacity of schools or academies to effectively meet the needs of children - through to full-time assessment placements for children in order to identify and address complex social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. The majority of pupils return successfully to mainstream schools following their support or placement.
The three PRUs within Ethos Multi Academy Trust will work closely with Kirklees Local Authority to deliver education to pupils who are unable to attend school for medical reasons. This involves partnership approaches with mainstream schools and the delivery of personalised packages of education in a variety of settings including pupils' homes, hospitals, libraries and other community centres.
A recent review of SEMH provision in Kirklees highlighted the need for more provision. It is therefore the intention of Ethos to submit an application for a new Alternative Provision Free School to further enhance the high-quality provision already available to meet increased demand in this area. The planned opening date for this provision is September 2020.
The academies currently involved in the trust are:
- Primary Pupil Referral Service - KS1 and 2 PRU (serving pupils up to the age of 11) - Ofsted Grade ‘Good’ (March 2014)
- Westfields - KS3 PRU (serving pupils ages 11-14) - Ofsted Grade ‘Good’ (April 2017)
- Ethos College - KS4 PRU open (serving pupils ages 14-16)- Ofsted Grade ‘Outstanding’ (February 2017)
Plans for the Future
The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:
- The establishment and development of an effective trust board, to provide rigorous governance: involving experienced individuals who will support and challenge the newly formed Ethos Academy Trust. The trust’s three settings have previously been governed by one management committee.
- The development of financial expertise to maximise cost effectiveness through economies of scale across the MAT and develop models to secure an income arm of provision within the trust.
- Leading the development and establishment of the proposed new Alternative Provision Free School in Kirklees, to complement existing provisions and enhance a tiered approach to intervention and support for pupils with SEMH needs in Kirklees.
Over the next five years the trust aspires to grow to a maximum of ten schools, containing a mixture of mainstream and special schools / alternative provisions within a 45 minute radius of Kirklees.

Role 1 – Trustee/Non-Executive Director
Trustees – or non-executive directors - are both charity trustees and company directors of the academy trust; the role is to hold to account the executive and senior leadership team. The board of trustees manages the business of the academy trust and may exercise all the powers of the trust. The trustees ensure compliance with the trust’s charitable objects and with company and charity law.
Non-executive directors will be responsible for maintaining stability during a period of rapid growth and the management of a dynamic structure. The role also includes contributing to financial planning for sustainability and growth, and holding the CEO/CFO to account.
The competencies required for this role include:
- Real Estate/Property
- Growth Management
A background in Estates Management is essential for this role. This individual will be equipped to support the Board and the CEO and CFO in managing risks and improvement planning associated with school premises. A thorough understanding of health and safety legislation is desirable.
6 hours per month (on average).
Location of Board Meetings
Board meetings are held at academy sites in Batley and Huddersfield.
Background on Academy Trusts
Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 73% of secondary schools and 28% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.
Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts (MATs). There are currently 726 multi academy trusts of 3+ schools. If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
