About the trust

Brampton Manor Academy converted to academy status in 2011 and in January 2014 joined the Trust, culminating in the formation of a multi-academy trust called Brampton Manor Trust. The trust is likely to grow to include a local primary school, which has submitted an application to join.

Brampton Manor Academy is an 11-18 school with over 2,000 students on roll, while Langdon Academy is a 3-16 school, also with over 2,000 students on roll. Both schools are located in East Ham, a culturally rich, ethnically diverse area. The majority of our students are from Asian and Afro-Caribbean backgrounds, bringing opportunities for integration, social development and community engagement. East Ham is also an area of high socio-economic deprivation. In both of our schools, over 50% of our students are in receipt of the pupil premium grant. The proportion of our students with special educational needs is also above the national average and we have resourced provision for autistic students located at Langdon Academy.

Our students make excellent progress relative to their starting points and over 95% continue in education or training after completing the compulsory phase of their education. A distinctive ethos that runs through our schools is that we firmly believe that there is no ceiling to what our students can achieve and that success comes through effort and determination. 

Plans for the Future

The trust is keen to grow in size and is committed to ensuring it remains a local multi academy trust (MAT) serving the community in Newham and the immediate surroundings. The key challenges for the board will be:

  1. Manage growth - the local authority is planning to invest approx. £18 million to increase the physical capacity of Brampton Manor Academy by an additional 4 forms of entry. This will take admission numbers from 300 to 420 pupils per year group and will involve significant capital works.
  2. Increase trust size - another large primary school (1,000+ students) will be joining the trust and this will involve significant integration work.
  3. School performance - to ensure that Langdon Academy receives at least a good Ofsted judgment at its next inspection.

The role of the non-executive director is:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

The trust would welcome candidates willing to take on the roles of Chair in due course, Audit Committee Chair and Remuneration Committee Chair.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 25% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
