Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust is seeking two new non-executive directors to join its board. The trust board is seeking to ensure it fulfils its statutory functions in relation to financial matters by recruiting new trustees with experience in this area. Board meetings are held at 2nd Floor, Jade Building, Albion Mills, Albion Road, Greengates, BD10 9TQ.

About the trust

Bradford Diocesan Academies Trust was set up in 2012 to support and sponsor Church of England Academies in Bradford on behalf of the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales (now the Anglican Diocese of Leeds).

The trust works with its schools to provide a network of support and challenge, so working together it can achieve its vision of improved outcomes and results for children and young people. BDAT is a charity and company limited by guarantee, governed by a board of Trustees who are responsible for, and oversee, the management of the company. In practice, the trust seeks to work with and alongside its schools to provide a good quality of education to all children in the schools.

The trust believes every child only gets one chance at education and they have a right to a good education.

As of July 2017, BDAT is made up of 10 academies operating across Bradford: four secondaries and six primaries. Four more primaries will join in Autumn 2017 and discussions are ongoing with another six primaries.

Plans for the Future

The key challenges for the board over the next 12-24 months are:

  1. The introduction of the National Funding Formula is planned for the 2018/2019 Academic Year. This process is putting significant pressure on both, Headteachers and Business Managers as they try to balance the budgets.
  2. Staff are the trust’s greatest asset. This year a key focus of the trust will be on establishing itself as an employer of choice, so that it can attract and recruit and retain only the highest calibre of teachers who share its aspirations and ambitions for pupils to succeed.
  3. Becoming schools of choice for pupils and parents in the community. BDAT will review its admissions policies to ensure they are accessible to families and support its schools to market themselves to attract new children where there are gaps.

The BDAT Board is a strategic partner to New Collective Learning Trust, working together to open a new sixth form provision in Bradford - New College Bradford. The trust is exploring a BDAT Alternative Provision free school for 11-16, sponsored by BDAT in partnership with the Aspire Trust and the Eden Teaching School Alliance as a named partner in this teaching school.

Person specification

Individuals will be asked to contribute to setting the strategic direction of the trust; to ensure and create robust accountability against its business plan and educational vision for its academies; and to ensure the best use of financial resources, ensuring solvency and effective financial management.

The trust seeks an individual with significant experience in the financial sector, who can deal confidently with senior individuals on all matters related to strategic planning, managing financial accounts, and change.

Background on academy trusts

Academy schools, which are charities run independently of local authority control, now account for 70% of secondary schools and 25% of primaries – and their number is growing all the time.

Many of these schools are grouped together as multi-academy trusts.  If the schools are to fulfil their potential, the trusts need non-executives (known in charity law as trustees) to bring a wide range of skills and experience to help guide strategy, ensure their ambitions can be soundly financed and keep their schools up to the mark delivering for their pupils.
